Our History:

Embry-Riddle’s SHPE Las Águilas Chapter was created in the spring of 2013 by its eventual founding President Steven O’Neill, along with other five founding officers. However, it was not until the fall of the same year in which Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University officially recognizes the chapter. Later, 16 of the 33 members who were registered with SHPE National had the opportunity to go to the 2013 SHPE National Conference held in Indianapolis, Indiana. This opportunity became a new and compelling gateway for Embry-Riddle students to network within the professional realm. During this conference, President Steven O’Neill and Vice President Esteban Sanchez received a plaque that officially incorporated SHPE ERAU into the list of chapters nationwide; this was a significant capstone in the history of our chapter.

The Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach SHPE Chapter achieves to be one of the most prominent student organizations on campus thanks to its outstanding growth within the past few years. Quality initiatives and development opportunities are prepared for our members in order to enhance their professional skills and career readiness. We have experienced a significant increase in membership and engagement, specifically during 2024 as we successfully registered 67 attendees for the national conference held in Anaheim, California, reflecting our commitment to professional development and networking opportunities.

Currently, the chapter hosts weekly general meetings, academic activities, and advancement opportunities, fundraisers, professional development events such as resume critiquing and mock interviews, all while retaining the core values of familia, community outreach, excellence in education, and resilience. These practices reassure the promise the chapter has not only to SHPE but with every member. The commitment to professional and academic development will always be our priority.

The ERAU SHPEtinas chapter has broken boundaries by fostering an inclusive environment for women around campus. During its time the ERAU SHPEtinas chapter has hosted many events ranging from social events with industry professionals to helping members prepare for the SHPE National Convention. We are committed to cultivated a supportive space that encourages academic, professional, and social growth with each and every woman in STEM.

Through events like Noche de Ciencias and STEM fairs, we provide mentorship and educational resources to empower young students to explore STEM fields and achieve their full potential.
-Maria Terrones Mesías (2028)

Professional Development

National Convention The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers National Convention is a culminating event for students of the ERAU chapter to demonstrate all they’ve leaned and interact with future employers and graduate school research opportunities to develop themselves professionally and personally.
-Alvin Pujols (2027)

Directorships The Embry-Riddle Chapter gives additional opportunity for growth and leadership through Directorships. These positions were introduced to our members as a step up to being a committee member, particularly for those interested in becoming an Executive Board member down the road. It’s a great time for the respective E-Board member to mentor their Directors and entrust them with tasks not usually preformed by committee members. It has proven successful, with various Directors going on to hold Executive Board positions.
